Kyongju is a sure place to visit when in Korea, as it was the capital of the culture-oriented Shilla Dynasty for a millennium, from the first century to the tenth century. The city welcomes strangers with its countless cultural artifacts, such as Pulguksa Temple, Kamunsa Temple, Emile Bell, and Sokkuram. But even if you go there and take a tour for a month, you still probably wouldn't know very much about them. After you read "Smiles of the Baby Buddha" and go to Kyongju, you will realize that one can see as much as one knows. The book is divided into two sections. The first part is an introduction as a guide for first-time visitors, and the second a collection of essays for deeper insights. The book is based on the author's best-selling travelogue series of "My Exploration of Cultural Heritage." After the Korean book was published in 1993, Yu became very famous, touching off a fresh craze for tours to cultural artifacts, particularly among youngsters. Yu, an art historian and critic, works as a professor at Yongnam University. |
